This incredibly rare painting is a form of contemplative artwork that features a cosmic diagram superimposed on a seated image of Parsvanatha, one of the Jain religion’s most important deities. The mystic diagram is dominated by linked squares and circles reflecting the Jain cosmos, similar in idea and function to Buddhist mandalas. The universe’s continents, mountains, and rivers are represented by the nine interwoven rings. Secondary Jain deities, recorded mantras, and mortal realm flora and animals are symmetrically balanced on either side of Parsvanatha.
